Stop Overthinking: Why ABC Poker Beats GTO in December

Home » Stop Overthinking: Why ABC Poker Beats GTO in December

Are you applying High Stakes concepts at Low Stakes tables? Discover why “Overthinking” is killing your winrate and learn how to simplify your game against recreational players.

You’re in a hand against a player who just sat down. He’s not full-stacked, he’s watching Netflix while playing, and he has a VPIP of 60%. The board is dry: K♠ 7♦ 2♣. You bet, he calls. Turn: 2♠. You bet, he calls. River: J♦. You value bet your AK, and suddenly he Shoves All-In.

Your “Smart Grinder” brain goes into overdrive: “He could be turning a 7x into a bluff here… My betting range is perceived as capped… The Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF) dictates I must call X% of the time…”

You call. He flips over 7♥ 2♥ for a random Full House. You tilt, close the table, and call the deck a liar.

But the mistake wasn’t the deck’s. The mistake was yours.

The "Misunderstood Genius" Syndrome

In December, the tables are flooded with players who don’t know what GTO, MDF, or Range Advantage mean. They play the two cards in their hand. Period.

The biggest mistake I see grinders making this season is the Leveling War.

Level 1: What do I have?
Level 2: What does he have?
Level 3: What does he think I have?

You are thinking on Level 3. Your recreational opponent (“The Holiday Gambler”) is on Level 1. When you try to apply complex logic against someone using zero logic, you are playing Chess against a pigeon. The pigeon is just going to knock over the pieces, crap on the board, and fly away victorious.

Occam's Razor in Poker

There is a philosophical principle called Occam’s Razor: “The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.”

In December poker, this is the law:

  1. If he Raises the River: It’s the nuts. It is not a balanced bluff. It is a monster. Fold your Top Pair and move on.
  2. If he bets 1 big blind (Donk Bet): It’s weakness. He wants to see the next card cheaply. Raise him.
  3. If he calls everything: He has something. Stop trying to fire that triple-barrel “galactic” bluff.

The Adjustment to Print Money Now

Do you want to end the year in the green? Swallow your ego and play “ugly.”

  • Fat Value Bets: When you have it, bet big. They call. Forget the 33% sizing to “keep his range wide.” If he has a pair, he calls 75%.
  • Zero Fancy Bluffs: If your hand has no showdown value, and the opponent is a Calling Station, give up. Do not burn chips trying to fold out someone who doesn’t know where the Fold button is.

Your profit graph doesn’t ask if you played beautifully. It only asks if you made the +EV decision. And against this field, +EV is simple, direct, and brutal.
